Neon Dreams: Tennessee State Fair After Dark

Bright lights. Fast rides. Loud laughter. There’s just something about the Tennessee State Fair after dark that makes me want to grab my camera and stay awhile. 🎡✨

Once the sun goes down in Lebanon, Tennessee, the fair takes on a whole different kind of energy. The midway comes alive with vibrant neon lights, spinning rides, music, and the excitement of people enjoying a summer night. For me, it’s one of those places where I could photograph for hours and still find something new to capture!

Night photography has always been my favorite. I love the way the lights pop against a dark sky, the motion of a fast-moving ride, and the way a slower shutter speed can turn all those colorful lights into streaks and movement. The fair gives me the perfect opportunity to play with all of it.

The Tennessee State Fair also has a long history in the state of Tennessee. The fair was historically held in Nashville, but after the 2020 pandemic, Tennessee began looking for a new home for the event. Since 2021, the Tennessee State Fair has been held in conjunction with the Wilson County Fair in Lebanon, bringing the state fair tradition to Middle Tennessee. Wilson County’s fair itself dates back to 1853, giving this celebration a pretty incredible history of its own!

For me, it’s the lights, movement, and atmosphere after dark that really steal the show! Ok, you got me, maybe the food plays a big part, too. There’s something about capturing a spinning ride frozen in time, colorful lights streaking across the frame, or the glow of the midway against the night sky that makes fair photography so much fun.
